How to Make Scented Wax Melts

Weigh the wax, add 6-10% fragrance oil, melt, stir, pour, and cure 5-14 days. The full sequence, with the temperature of every stage.

Start on the scale. Weigh the wax for the mould — a standard snap bar runs 50-65 g — then weigh fragrance oil at 6-10% of the wax weight. Past about 12% the oil sweats out as the bar cools and leaves an oily ring in the dish, so more oil is not more scent.

Melt the wax to 65-75 °C, fully liquid and clear. Container paraffin liquefies at 52-58 °C and soy blends at 49-65 °C, so this range gives every common base working headroom without approaching the oil's limits.

Add the oil at 60-75 °C and stir until the wax turns uniform. Most candle fragrance oils carry a flash point above 90 °C, so this band is safe — but add the oil hotter and the light top notes flash off within seconds, leaving a flat-smelling bar.

If the batch is coloured, dose liquid dye at 1-3 drops per 100 g of wax. Going past about 1 g per 100 g — 1% by weight — is what stains the warmer dish later.

Pour at 55-65 °C and leave the moulds undisturbed while the bars cool. Then cure: 5-14 days before the hot throw peaks, with 1-2 weeks in a sealed bag the usual working window. Burning early is the most common reason a home batch disappoints.

Stored sealed, cool and out of the sun, finished bars keep their scent for 12-24 months; above about 30 °C they soften and the window shrinks.

  • Weigh: wax first, then oil at 6-10% of wax weight
  • Melt: 65-75 °C until clear
  • Stir in oil: 60-75 °C, never hotter
  • Dye: 1-3 drops per 100 g of wax
  • Pour: 55-65 °C, then cool undisturbed
  • Cure: 5-14 days, sealed, before the first burn
